Master Hao Zhihua started her wushu training at the age of nine at the Beijing Sports Academy under the instruction of Wu Bin, one of the nineteen highest ranked martial artists in China, who was director of the Beijing Institute for Wushu Research and a pioneer of modern wushu in China. For fifteen years she competed in China as a member of the world-renowned Beijing Wushu Team, winning the title of National All-Around Champion three years in a row.

Hao Zhihua has the unique distinction of being the only person in China's history to have won six gold medals, in addition to one silver medal, in a single national competition. She is also one of only two wushu athletes who have ever received the "Ten Best Athletes in China" award, along with teammate Jet Li. In total, she accumulated over 80 gold, silver, and bronze medals during her competitive career.
In addition to coach Wu Bin, Hao Zhihua trained under coach Li Junfeng and studied yang-style Tai Chi under master Yang Zhenduo. She is proficient in long fist, yang and chen-style Tai Chi, broadsword, straightsword, staff, spear, eagle claw, baguazhang, snake fist, double hook sword, single- and double chainwhip and double broadsword.

After leaving the Beijing Wushu Team she received a special invitation to attend the Beijing Teacher's College of Physical Education for an intensive degree program in physical education. After graduating she continued to teach at the college for two years before leaving China. She taught abroad before finally settling in Berkeley, California in 1990, where she currently provides instruction in wushu, Tai Chi, and bagua in both English and Mandarin Chinese. Coah Hao maintains a close connection to ShiChaHai Sports Academy, her former school, where she takes students every summer to live, study and train with China's top professional martial artists in a state-of-the-art facility in the heart of Beijing. Their curriculum includes language instruction with a mandarin Chinese tutor, and intense daily wushu, sanshou and tai chi training.

Peter Pebler
Coach Peter has been studying wushu for over 9 years and brings a
history of dedication and perserverence to Wushu West. Specializing in southern fist, spear, broadsword and bagua
zhang, coach Peter has competed and placed in several regional and national wushu tournaments. In addition Coach
Peter was the tournament director for the 1999 U.C. Berkeley Chinese Martial Arts Tournament -- the largest Wushu
Tournament held in the U.S.A.

Lynda Cence
Coach Lynda brings a background in traditional southern Chinese Martial Arts
to Wushu West, having trained in Tibetan White Crane for several years. Coach Lynda has been at Wushu West for over
8 years and has travelled extensively to China to receive training at the Beijing Sports Institute with the world
renowned Beijing Wushu Team. Coach Lynda's specialties include long fist, straightsword, staff and eagle
claw. |
James Cardinell
Coach James has a rich background of Martial Arts, Boxing and acrobatics. He has traveled to both China and Thailand to train professionally in wushu, sanda (san shou) and muay Thai kickboxing. James is a passionate teacher, he brings a lot of energy to class and is always encouraging everyone to give their best. He is proficient in Chain Whip, Longfist and many forms of Self Defense. |
Pierre Combes
Coach Pierre is one of Wushu West's most driven students, and is a very pragmatic instructor.
His previous training in White Crane and Fencing has made him a very versitile martial artist, and very pratical in the application
of wushu. Pierre's specialties are Southern Fist and Pu Dao. |
Mark Moran
Mark began his wushu training at Wushu West in 1995. In 2000 he was both
the Western Regional Grand Champion and the National Silver Medalist for
NanQuan (Southern Fist).
in China Mark has trained with the Beijing Wushu Team, The Shanghai Wushu
Team and the Shandong Wushu Team. He has also trained at both Beijing
Sports University (Beijing TiYu DaXue), People's University of China
(ZhongGuo RenMin DaXue) and The Shanghai Wushu Center (Shanghai Wushu Yuan).
Mark's list of coaches and instructors include Wu Bin, Zhang Xian Ming, Cao
Wei Ming, Yang Rong Kuan, Li De Hua, Jian Zeng Jiao, Qiu Dong Xing, Li
Qiang, Yang Bei Bei, Li Neng Miao, Yang Yu Hong, Xie Fu Yan, Zhu Wen Jun,
Wei Jian and Wang Peng Sheng.
Mark's specialties include Southern Fist (nanquan), Southern Staff (nangun)
and Southern Sabre (nandao). |
